How to Help Your Little One Adjust to a Pre-School
Here are some simple steps you can take to ensure your child is set up for a great year at their new pre-school.
- Play with Your Toddler
Sounds simple enough, right?
Most parents know that their toddlers can learn a lot from playing. While preparing to attend pre-school and life in general too, it can help them learn basic skills easily. This could mean playing ball, card or board games. It doesn’t matter the method you choose, as long as they are playing with others.
However, when playing with them, make sure you don’t let them win all the time as this will set a bad example and the wrong expectations for them. The aim should be to teach them how to be resilient.
- Set a Routine for Them to Follow
By setting a routine for them to follow, you will provide them with the opportunity to make decisions and to act responsibly. Also, the routine can ease their transition to the structure that pre-schools often follow. Keep in mind that the little ones can learn best when they have a daily schedule or routine as this provides them with the opportunity to learn about sequencing, order and can have an understanding of the concept of time from a young age.
By establishing a schedule, you will also mentally prepare them for the day ahead while creating a framework where creative learning can take place. In the absence of a schedule to follow at home, your child will have a difficult time adjusting to the new routine surrounding their pre-school and when they start going to school later in life too.
- Pretend Play with Them
It’s a good idea to pretend play with them and explore the idea of a pre-school. You can take turns being the teacher, parent and child. And, while doing so, act out common routines such as saying bye to mom or dad, reading stories, singing songs, taking your coat off and hanging it in its place and so on. This will provide some reassurance to your child that a pre-school is a good place where they will be able to play and learn at the same time. Also, be ready to answer any questions they may have patiently. This will help reduce some of the anxiety as they will have and offer a sense of being in control.
Keep in mind that a pre-school offers ample opportunities for your little one’s growth. And, a little preparation beforehand will go a long way in ensuring they look forward to the experience instead of dreading it. As a parent, it will help make this transition an experience that helps both you and your child build confidence.
