With the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, all the schools and other educational institutions across the nation have had to remain closed. As a result, children are currently attending schools through various personalised app-based online classes. While other temporary solutions are being used to provide remote education to children such as Zoom for Education and Google Classrooms, parents are struggling to adjust to the new scenario.
However, it’s important to help children at home stay focused on learning and avoid using social media, playing games and watching too many videos. This is making it necessary to provide a sense of routine and structure while being a positive force encouraging them to keep learning.
With this in mind, here are some tips to help children continue learning at home during the lockdown and/or quarantine.

COVID-19 Pandemic: Encouraging Children to Keep Learning at Home
Here are a few tips to help children continue learning, whether it’s through personalised app-based online classes or another form of online schooling.
- Focus on Things You Can Do
Certain events are out of our control and the COVID-19 pandemic and schools shutting down are a few such examples. And, such things can create a fair amount of anxiety among both children and adults.
And, when faced with stressful situations, adults and children tend to panic and often act impulsively. But it’s important to explain to them that they should approach the situation calmly while sharing a few tips to help them be prepared.
For instance, in the wake of the pandemic, encourage them to maintain basic hygiene standards. Also, give them the responsibility to perform various tasks such as looking after a pet, caring for a sibling, assisting with meals and making sure their room stays clean.
- Establish a Routine
While many children may be treating the lockdown as an extended holiday, parents should ensure their routine isn’t disrupted. For this, work with them to create a daily schedule and a plan to help them meet the outlined goals. Furthermore, help your child through their academic schedule and prepare goals to achieve for each subject.
To simplify the process, create a to-do list for them to follow and write things that need to be completed. But remember to ask for their suggestions when creating a list to help them feel a sense of accomplishment when they complete the tasks. And, be flexible to adapt the routine to the school’s schedule and their changing needs.
- Make Space for Learning
If you have someone that is currently working from home, they will be able to relate to getting more work done when they are in a quiet and comfortable space. And, the same applies to children. However, this should be a different setup than the areas where they usually relax and/or play games. Remember, children will spend a considerable amount of time in this space each day. So, parents should keep an eye out for orthopaedic issues that may arise in terms of their posture and comfort over time.
These are trying times for us all so you should provide yourself and your family with some flexibility while getting through the day. After all, we are all charting new territory and no one knows how or when this will be over and things will go back to “normal”. By allowing your child to take control of his/her own learning, you will help them become independent and proactive individuals.
